West University, also known as "The Neighborhood City" is one of "the" places to live in Houston. Designated as the 8th wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income, over 5000 residents have helped this area develop into one of the most desirable and affluent parts of Houston.
West University is completely surrounded by the city of Houston and was originally comprised of mid 20th century bungalows & cottages. Today, more than two thirds of the existing houses in West University have been torn down and replaced with newer housing. Strict city ordinances dictate that each lot contains a certain amount of open space to prohibit new construction from taking over the entire lot size. This gives uniformity to the neighborhood despite varying construction styles of Contemporary, Tudor, New Orleans, traditional Georgian, & French designed homes as well as original ranch & cottage homes.
